Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th of April in 1972. The family was also dominated by her grandmother. She grew up as an only child. Scott attended Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduation, Scott enrolled into Temple University. Between two work as a teacher, she was studying secondary education. She hoped to become a high-school English teacher. After three years as a teacher's aide and studying, her dream to become a high school English teacher was cut short. She started her career as a spoken-word artist, performing her own work in live poetry readings. She eventually linked up to Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by both. In a Roots concert, she was spotted to be an artist. Later, she secured collaborations musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. Also, she was performers in her participation in the Canada tour of the Broadway musical production Rent. She became the first signed artist for label Hidden Beach Recordings label.
